+ A Long, Eventful Weekend
|
08:34 PM
This past weekend was fun, but very unproductive. Spent Thursday night at home watching I Heart Huckabees on DVD with Jen. It was a relaxing night, which was very much needed after a long, stressful week. However, the movie was horrible. Well, at least not my type of movie, or am I just too dumb to understand it? Oh well, take your pick, I don't care.
Friday night we hung out at one of the brothers' place until really late. It was fun though. I hadn't had one of those little friends get-togethers for a LONG time, and I really enjoyed it. We went to Denny's afterward for a late night dinner (or an extremely early breakfast?) and didn't get back until 3 in the morning.
Saturday night was the second LGBTQIA Non-Sexist Dance of the quarter. Luke (a brother from the frat) and I went to watch The Incredibles at the theater on campus before the dance. OMG, it is so good. I've heard lots of good things about it, but I still wasn't too sure about it. Then, it totally blow my mind!! Well, a must-see movie for everyone! The dance was fun. Jen went as well and we drank a bit. It was a fun time. This random guy was trying to teach me how to dance with him, and I remember he was totally dry-humping from behind (or so I wished?). It was weird... but I was drunk, so I had a great time. Afterward we went to Denny's with people from LGBTQIA and the fraternity, and didn't get back 'til 3 in the morning (yes, again).
Sunday was chill, but I didn't wake up until 1pm so half a day was gone already. I need to say sorry that I didn't go through with my plan of making a new layout for Dabs. Instead, I uploaded some of my sketches to my Deviant Art account. I've signed up there for more than a year ago but I never had the time to do anything with it. So I thought I might as well use it to help manage my sketches and artworks. It's easier to use that as my portfolio and to get feedback from people.
I went to my first ever pledge class meeting on Sunday night. We've elected positions for our pledge class. I'm the secretary and I don't really know exactly what I need to do besides taking notes during meetings. Oh well, it's not like I can do anything else. I also got a present with a letter in it from my big brother at the meeting. We won't be able to find out who our big brothers are until the Retreat, which is next weekend, but I've been emailing my big brother back and forward, and he seems like a super duper awesome big brother so far. Like I'm able to talk to him and share a lot of personal things with him. I was just so surprised that he actually went out of his way to find out what I like and get me the present. That was just incredible. Like I don't even know who he is yet but I feel like he knows me so well already, which is really heart-warming but a bit freaky as well. Oh well, we'll find out next weekend.
Yesterday I didn't wake up 'til way past noon again, and then spent the whole afternoon and the first half of the night helping Lee (one of my pledge brothers) move. He's moving out of his apartment into this new place a few streets down. It took us forever though 'cause he has a lot of stuff. Then afterward we went to this gay bar called The Hole in Point Loma (close to downtown San Diego) with Robbie (a brother from the frat) and Greg (this guy from the Navy that Robbie is seeing). They have this Wet Underwear Contest thing every Monday night, and last night was the final. The crowd in the bar was generally an older crowd, so no one really my type there, except the last contestant of the Wet Underwear Contest, who definitely had a nice body and he was clean shaved too. LOL They've raffle ticket there and I won a T-shirt. But it's a medium, which is way too big for me. So I guess I'll just wear it at home.
I didn't get home until 12:30am and didn't go to bed until 1am... and I had to wake up at 5:30 this morning to catch the bus for my 8am class. So I'm dead tired right now. After a long weekend of fun, today was a bad day... I don't feel like going into details about it. This entry is long enough already, perhaps I'll save this for next time. Off to bed I go...

+ Canada Rocks!
|
11:44 PM
I stayed up until 3am this morning to do some last minute homework, and I had to wake up at 5:30am to catch the bus to school for my 8am class. So, today was a long day for me even though nothing much was going on.
There was a flower delivery this afternoon. I answered the door and was shocked to find that the flower was for me. At first I thought it was probably for Jen from her boyfriend or something. It was from my big brother and it came with this card from him telling me not to stress out over some stuff with my department. I don't think I've ever gotten flower before, so this is my first time. It was truly heart-warming and definitely brought a smile to my face.
I got a think BLUE bracelet yesterday on campus. Too bad they don't have any youth size yet, but I absolutely LOVE mine. Totally supporting the cause and hopefully by 2008 people in this country won't be blinded by those so-called "moral values" and blind "patrioticism" anymore.
Read this article from The New Frontier, a new Liberal newspaper on campus. I thought it was just a great article. The Canadian Prime Minister is way awesome, and I couldn't have said it better myself. We should all remember that "separate but equal is never equal". Remember the civil rights movement and learn from history. Just want to share it with you guys, especially with all those cool and awesome Canadians out there...
Fight for Homosexual Marriage
by Anya Powditch, Contributing Writer
On December 9, 2004, the Supreme Court of Canada ruled in favor of proposed legislation to legalize homosexual marriage. The court stated that the draft protected both the rights to free exercise of religion and the rights of individual equality guaranteed to Canadian citizens in the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms.
This ruling sparked the process for the creation of Bill C-38, entitled "The Civil Marriage Act." Formally proposed to the House of Commons on February 1, 2005, the bill is still under debate and will eventually be put to a free vote in the House, though Parliament will have the final say.
On February 16, Prime Minister Paul Martin addressed the House arguing in support of Bill C-38 and responded to the charges of Steven Harper, leader of the Conservative Party of Canada.
Prime Minister Martin argued for "The Civil Marriage Act" by indicating that the "bill protects minority rights" while in simultaneously "affirms the Charter guarantee of religious freedom."
Harper opposed Bill C-38 stating, "It is a clear threat to religious freedom." He then proposed that "the law should continue to recognize the traditional definition of marriage as the union of one man and one woman to the exclusion of all others, but at the same time we would propose that other forms of union, however structured should be entitled to the same legal rights, privileges and obligations as marriage." He argued that this position "is based on a very solid foundation and time tested values."
Challenging the opposition's claim that the legalization of homosexual marriage forfeits religious freedom, Prime Minister Martin argued that under Bill C-38, religious officials are in no way required to perform marriage ceremonies against their religious beliefs.
Martin continued in opposition to the Conservative's proposals to grant civil unions to homosexual couples instead of civil marriages, stating that civil unions do not afford the citizens of Canada the equality guaranteed to them in their constitution. In rejecting the plan, Martin argued that homosexuals "would be equal, but not quite as equal as the rest of Canadians," if only granted civil unions and then added, "we must always remember that 'separate but equal' is not equal."
Bill C-38 asserts, "that only equal access to civil marriage, as distinct from civil union, respects same-sex couples' Charter equality rights."
Prime Minister Martin then addressed his own religious qualms with homosexual marriage, indicating that four years prior he had in fact voted to uphold the "traditional definition of marriage." However, he stated that his responsibility as Prime Minister" is to defend the charter in its entirely" and therefore he believes that homosexual civil marriages in Canada should be legalized.
Seven out of ten of the Canadian Provinces have already legalized gay marriage. In Niagara Falls, Ontario where homosexual marriages have been legal since January 2001, the president of the Niagara Fallsview Casino Resort indicates his support by opening the casino's chapel to both hetero- and homo- sexual marriage. Since the legalization of homosexual marriages in specific areas of Canada many American couples have crossed the border to be granted marital rights not afforded to them in the United States.

+ Last Week of Lectures
|
05:28 PM
I can't believe I've neglected blogging for more than a week. Last weekend was the Retreat for Delta Lambda Phi. We went camping at Lake Jennings Park and it was a great time out there in the country. I found out who my Big Brother is, and my guess was right, it is Shawn. I'm very happy that he's my Big Bro in the fraternity, because he's such an awesome and caring person, always looking our for us pledges.
Then I'd been occupied with school work this past entire week 'cause it was the last week of lectures and it was also the week when all the final term papers and projects are due. I had a final paper and a lab project due Thursday, and being the procrastinator I'm, I waited until Wednesday to start on them and ended up staying up all night to finish them. This quarter is defintiely not the hardest quarter I've ever had. In fact, it is relatively easy since I'm only taking 3 classes with 12 credits. But for some reasons, I'm not doing too good at all this quarter; probably the worst quarter I've had ever since I started college. Maybe it is because of the classes I'm taking -- two art history classes and a music class. Everyone knows that I hate history and I suck at music... I don't even care too much about getting A's in these classes anymore; I just want to get them over with and not have to deal with them for good.
Wednesday was Jen's 22nd birthday, so Jen, Kyle, and I went out to California Pizza Kitchen for dinner. Within these seven months since we met, I can't believe how close we've gotten. They really helped and supported me a great deal as friends and roommates, especially Jen. Without her, I doubt I would be as open with myself and other people about my sexuality as I'm now.
Thursday night Shawn came over and we watched one of the DVDs he got me, Donnie Darko Director's Cut. It's really good and I like it more than the original theater version. After the movie, we kind of just sat and talked for a while about all kinds of things. He ended up staying until 3 in the morning. I was awake for more than 27 hours. I still don't know how I did it.
Last night Shawn, Andy, Lee, Dan, and I went to this play called Tales of Ordinary Madness at UCSD 'cause Andy needed it for a class. Afterward we went to Stephen's house and hung out there until around 1:30am.
Next week is finals week. On top of the three finals (two on Monday and one on Thursday), I still have a final term paper due Monday and a final lab project due Wednesday. I'm not going to be free until late next week. Wish me luck!
